1st Ashes Test: Day 2 Wrap-Up

Day 2 was a mixed one, with wickets falling regularly for England. Australia started the day with Watson and Katich out in the middle and forming a nice partnership of 78 before Watson edged to Strauss at first slip on 36. Ponting came out and he was gone quickly, out for 10 and Katich soon followed him just after lunch, making his 50 and going. Clarke and Hussey have formed a nice combination in the past but Clarke was watching a lot of deliveries and was out for 9 after facing 50 balls.

Marcus North didn't help his selection chances for the 2nd test, making 1 before he was caught by Collingwood of a Swann delivery. The big hitting Haddin came out and that is where things finished for the day, Haddin not out on 22 and Hussey 81 not out and having an 80 run stand. These two will be looking to guide Australia to about a 100 to 150 run lead and then try and bowl England out again.

Ashes 1st Test Day 1 Wrap-Up

The day started poorly for the aussies, loosing the toss and being sent out to field. From there, it was all up, Hilfenhaus picking up Strauss for a 3rd ball duck. Johnathan Trott joined Alistair Cook out in the middle and together built a solid partnership of 41 before Trot fell LBW to Watson in the over after lunch. There was a high amount of anticipation when Kevin Pietersen walked out to the middle and he started well, making 43 including 6 fours before he became Peter Siddles first victim. From there it was smooth sailing for Australia, with Siddle picking up Collingwood caught by a great catch from Ponting for 4.

The two most important men came together when Ian Bell joined opener Cook and together they put on 72 for the 5th wicket. Cook became the start of Siddles hat-trick, edging to Watson at first slip. Prior joined Cook back in the rooms after only facing one ball and the Aussies caught Stuart Broad off guard, having to wait for Broad to walk out on to the ground. The rush soon became disaster for Broad, falling LBW to a brilliant yorker from Siddle. Swann was in his normal groove, hitting balls hard before he became Siddles 6th and last victim.

With two wickets to get, Ponting brought Doherty into the attack and it worked a gem, with the debutant spinner removing Bell then Anderson in quick succession. England finished all out for 260, Bell top scoring for the visiors with 76. Simon Katich and Shane Watson came out to the middle and together guided Australia to stumps, finished at 0-25 with Watson not out on 9 and Katich on 15.

Essendon Coaching Panel

Essendon has today announced that they have accquired both Sean Wellman (former Essendon Premiership player) from Melbourne and Simon Goodwin from Adelaide to be two of James Hirds assistant coaches. I think that they will be some great coaches but I would just like to see a coach like Mark Williams or Gary Ayres as an understudy to Hird and to give him a bit of guidance.

Gary Ablett

Geelong superstar of the decade Gary Ablett is set to announce today that his is moving to new AFL franchise, the Gold Coast Suns, according to reports. More information to come at 12:30 today. In my opinion, this move would change the whole dynamic of the AFL competition. It would also help the Gold Coast itself, not just out on the field, but it would give them confidence knowing that they have one of the best players in the last 5 to 7 years on their list.

Footy News

Today, James Hird as been appointed as the new senior head coach for Essendon. I feel he'll do a great job at the Bombers although because he hasn't done any type of apprenticeship, this will count against him whereas Nathan Buckley has been involved with the drawn Grand Final so this will be great for his coaching.

On to other news, Mark 'Bomber' Thompson has left Geelong for a 3 month break, supposedly to cool down. It has been leaked to my sources that he is off on a break to have a look at a position with Essendon.

It is also looking more and more likely that Leon Davis will be an omission for Collingwood to face St Kilda in the Grand Final replay while Michael Gardiner will be replaced by Ben McEvoy.
